Here are a few of Ian's pictures from Clifton CC's weekend away in May 2004, staying at Dentdale Youth Hostel. Click on these for bigger pictures.
Following a cafe stop in Masham,
those who (thought they) were fit
cycled up Coverdale over Park Rash to Wharfedale and Langstrothdale,
then over Fleet Moss (Yorkshire's highest tarmac at 589m)
meeting your relatively unfit photographer at Hawes.
This first picture shows the fittest pressing on down Garsdale
for the climb over Shaking Moss to Dentdale.
The rest took the not so hard Widdale route to Dentdale.
This panorama stretches from Baugh Fell in the west to Garsdale Head station in the north.
Looking up from the same spot toward Shaking Moss,
which is beyond this false summit.
Looking down from the top of the previous shot,
the dale towards the Mallerstang may be seen in the distance.
Off a late start, Paul catches up atop Shaking Moss.
Rise Hill separates Dentdale on the left from Garsdale on the right,
all under a bright sky.
The Howgill Fells of the Lake District can be seen in the distance.
Still high on Shaking Moss above Dentdale - with the residents.
Partway down the descent to Dentdale, with lots still to do.
There's more to see than just the big landscapes.
What are they?
Dent railway station, high above the dale.
Dentdale from the railway station.
The Sportsman Inn, to which we would walk back after dinner.
Dent Head viaduct near the youth hostel, before breakfast the next morning.
The Clifton group about to depart the hostel:
Cath, Paul, Willy, Rob, Chris, Phil, Helen and Steve.
Cath climbing above Dent Head viaduct,
the morning air still cold and the sun already warm.
Having ridden together down much of Ribblesdale,
the long climb from Stainforth past Pen-y-ghent splintered the group.
Halton Gill at the top of Littondale
with one of many fields of buttercups seen in the Dales this weekend.
We then stopped in Wharfedale for lunch at Grassington,
before heading home to York.
Over 170 miles in 2 days.
Thanks to Rob for organising the weekend.
